The Board of Trustees of the Islip Public Library appreciates the generosity of individuals and organizations that contribute to the support of the Library through donations.

Growing Gifts Campaign to Honor or Memorialize

The Library’s Growing Gifts program enables individuals, families and groups to make donations to the Library to memorialize or honor loved ones, anniversaries, and other special moments.  When monetary donations are received in any size through our Growing Gifts program, the donor is acknowledged with a handwritten note on special Library stationery. Likewise, the person and/or family of the individual being recognized, memorialized or celebrated also receives a handwritten note giving notification of the gift in his or her name.  Gifts received through this program can be used to purchase a book or other item for the Library’s collection. Gifts can also be general in nature and can be used to support some aspect of the Library’s service program. Gifts made through this program are tax-deductible and are a wonderful alternative to the more typical acknowledgements, such as sending flowers, especially when the person being honored has been a lover of libraries and/or reading.

General Gifts to the Library

Donations are accepted with the understanding that the Library is granted and retains unconditional irrevocable ownership of the donation and that there will be no restrictions on the Library’s possession or disposition of gifts.  The Library has the sole right to decide which gifts shall be added to the collection, sold for proceeds to enrich the Library’s services, or discarded. All gifts shall be subject to disposition at the Library’s discretion. The Library has the right to refuse any gift which the Library Director or Board deem not in the Library’s best interests to accept.

The Board of Trustees must approve any gift to the Library valued at over $100.

When cash is donated, the donor and the Library Director may mutually agree on what the money will be used to purchase, or the gift may be made to the Library to be used solely at the Library’s discretion.  The Library encourages gifts of cash not earmarked for specific items, so as to best support the Library’s mission and overall service program.

Book plates are only placed in books purchased by the Library, never in books donated by individuals.

The Library reserves the right to decide the conditions of display, housing and access to donated materials.

The Library does not commit itself to perpetual housing of a donation.  When gift items are withdrawn from the collection, the Library shall not notify the donor of the withdrawal.  The Library will not automatically replace worn out, damaged or lost gift items.

Until further notice, the library will not be accepting book & media donations.
